How to Choose the Best Incontinence Product for You

How to Choose the Best Incontinence Product for You

It’s important to feel comfortable, confident, and supported when using incontinence products, but sometimes it can be tricky to know what products will meet your needs. We’ve compiled a few tips to help you choose between products.

What Are My Options?

The two main incontinence products available are pads or pullups. These products are disposable and come in a range of absorbency levels from light through to super absorbent.  Products such as net pants or fix pants are designed to be used in conjunction with pads to help keep them in place, and can often be washed and reused.  If you prefer reusable options, Australian brand Conni designs reusable incontinence underwear, swimwear, bed mats, and more

Things to Consider When Choosing Your Products

Gender

Gender-specific incontinence pads are designed with anatomy and underwear styles in mind. Male incontinence products have more absorbency in the front, whereas women’s pants focus more on absorbency in the bottom centre area. The pads are shaped differently to fit into underwear suitably and minimise leakage.

Mobility

Consider your activity level and mobility when choosing products. If you are very active, you could opt for a pullup product, or pads combined with fixpants to ensure the pad is secure and stays in place during the day. If you are mostly bedbound, you might like to have a bed mat or pad as an extra layer of protection.

Leakage Volume

The volume of urine leakage is a key factor that will influence what product is most suitable for you. If you only experience occasional drips, you can use a lighter absorbency pad than if you have complete loss of bladder control. Picking a product with the right level of absorbency will ensure that you are protected and comfortable.

The Importance of Skin Care

Using skin care specifically designed for incontinence will help to keep your skin happy and healthy. When using incontinence products, you may find that your skin becomes irritated due to contact with dampness or more frequent washing with regular soap. Incontinence-specific skin care products such as gentle skin washes and barrier creams can reduce this irritation.
